Flames of xenophobia
Policemen try to save a man who was set alight by a mob during clashes believed to be linked to recent anti-foreigner violence in Reiger Park informal settlement east of Johannesburg on May 18. The man died later in hospital. Hundreds of foreigners took refuge in police stations and churches as week-old violence against them spread across townships.

i think is very bad to burn people alive the should be other ways of removing foreigners
by vusi on May 19, 2008, 11:33 am
It is CRUEL and absurd. They are killing the very same people who helped our politicians during the apartheid years. They were given refuge in foreign countries and they were not burnt alive. South Africans should start using their heads and get skills, they should stop accusing foreigners for stealling their jobs. We have Asians and whites who are foreigners in South Africa and maybe they are here illegally also. This is very wrong and totally irresponsible, we should stand together as the nation to put and end to this before it ruins our beautiful country
by Cynthia on May 19, 2008, 12:06 pm
This is unacceptable. Only ignorance could explain such actions. Those people have forgotten about where we come from. its a shame.
by Vuyani on May 19, 2008, 12:23 pm
This is really evil. How can a normal person burn someone? What has South Africa turned into?
by Charmaine on May 19, 2008, 12:54 pm
this is not right.southa friacns....should wake up and do it for themselves.and stop blaming other people for our own laziness.....God dos not support this.
by khanyi on May 19, 2008, 1:46 pm
vusi you are an idiot. if your intelligence is anything to go by then this country is doomed.

I am no loner living in South Afria, i now live in the Netherlands but South Africa is still my home. I was very proud of being south african besides the fraud and corrupt leaders and whatsoever.\Not that i am ignorant of the fact that xenophobia des exist, maybe i have always been and idealist, but i never thought that one day like last night i'll be sitting, watching news to see such an ugly side of south africa. I felt ashamed, stripped of the my pride of my county. South Africns have been known of their tolerance, again this is not said our of complete ignorance. I do not have suggestions but i think this is not the time to be forming panels whatsoever to investigae attacks like some others seem to think that is the way to go by. this is a crime and it should be treated as such, these murdersshould be caught and treated as murders no brain surgery there, it is plain and simple. The justice system in South Africa is too compassionate. This has to change and fast, before south africa is seen as the xenophoibic country. This is also a sign of the developmental problems that south africa faces today. maybe focus on that should concern the leaders on how are they going to deal with all of this and not look at these attacks separately from the disparities in our society. all in all this is sickening and the government must treat this of natinal importance. south africa is viewed closely by the international community, there has been too many scandals i dont think the country can use another one like this. it must not be taken for granted that there is a lot that has to be done, including instilling tolerance in nation building. This is just the same as the incident in the free state university where those idiotic studets treated those people like that. This is another form of apartheid
by londile dlamini on May 19, 2008, 2:36 pm
I'm saddened by the behaviour of our countrymen. Has Vusi rightly pointed out, we have tolerated white and Asian foreigners in this country much longer ... and countries like Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia gave our politicians refuge while the evils of apartheid ravaged our beautiful country. We South Africans need to stand together and stop this craziness!
by Celeste on May 19, 2008, 2:40 pm
Totally ashamed to be a south African. total lack of leadership. everybody in politics trying to cover their butts instead of solving the problem at hand, not facing the real issues at hand. Zimbabwe issue is, was, will be a humanitarian crisis, just admit it.Mbeki must be on the ground with the people for a change, stop sending your "yes", to talk to the people, you are the man in charge, BE INCHARGE for a change, at the moment, you are not.How many people must die before we get our act together, not with just this, but crime too, are we waiting for the delayed crime stats in a years time to allocate budget for this? This problem has been around for a long time, i guess you were hoping for it to go away like everything else, does the arms deal and scorpions ring a bell.I guess we can't amend the constitutions for this one, we can't "disband the foreigners".i know there's no money when dealing with humans, especially African life, like 2010 WC. for once , lets put a price of a US $10000000000 to a human life maybe we'll see the value of every life.
HOME AFFAIRS: this is the result of your years of denial that there is no rampant corruption, incompetence, ARROGANCE. your stuff and their attitudes are criminals as a result of this.
POLICE: this is the result, of bribes collected and dockets disappearing, criminals buying themselves out of prisons, courts. hence the crime angle. People don't feel protected, people live in fear.
DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING: just like the corrupt police, and corrupt home affairs you are as guilty as the mob.
lastly, EVERY CORRUPT POLITICAIN sitting at home enjoying a nice house, life from corrupt dealings, you are as responsible.
Deal with poverty, employment, education, social security - it's no accident there things are happening at the most poorest of our communities. this is because YOU NEVER LISTEN to the complaints of these poor people. stop looking down on the, stop treating them like second class citizens. When they talk, LISTEN, don't tell them what you think they said, just LISTEN. like a child looking for attention, now you have to deal with them and their complains. i have no doubt that criminals are joining this as an opportunity to do what they do best, rob everybody else of their human right and their dignity, knowing very well they will be protect and there is a quick way out of trouble. The core remains, promises spanning a life time by politicians that barely materialize. TOTALY ASHAMED TO BE HERE!!!

What about those who have foreign friends? This should be stopped becuase no one has a right to kill people like animals I wish these cruel people will pay for this one day. Please let the law take its cause against these dogs. spupids illitirate and iresponsible citizens.
by Ignatius on May 19, 2008, 3:17 pm
I cannot believe after what South Africa has been through in the past decades, we would in turn cause unnecessary to those that once helped. My heart breaks just at the thought of it. I'm appalled, disappointed with my fellow brothers and sisters have behaved, regardless of your economic status. There is always better ways and means of dealing with injustice by the government... I pray for God to forgive us for what we have and are doing.
by Charmaine on May 19, 2008, 3:21 pm
i am really saddened by what i see, what has our beautiful rainbow nation come to, those immigrants are humans too, as a lot of south africans are in different countries. i am currently in switzerland, i really am ashamed to be a south african, where does all this hate come from, in my opinion the south african people are failures and need someone to blame for their pathetic lives and shamely blame our african brothers. i am disgusted.
by tshidi jiyane on May 19, 2008, 3:22 pm
gold will punish us for the evil we have visited on each other. where is the spirit of Ubuntu that epitomized the Rainbow Nation? where is the humanity? only God Knows where we are headed!! may God have mercy on our souls

by thierry on May 19, 2008, 7:23 pm
Ignorance is the root of all evil. South Africa has and will continue to prove this. The ANC had safe houses dotted all over Zimbabwe during South Africa's Struggle to liberate its people from Apartheid. Fast forward into the future. Those very same protectors (Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi etc) are now the victims of the very people they helped to liberate. The root cause of South Africa's Ignorance (view of Foreigners as threats) is the nature of the Struggle. Class Boycotts was a the order of the day (thereby South Africans missed out on education theyby knowledge), burned down schools etc. The leaders organising the struggle did not plan ahead (beyond we are going to be free). Based on this lack of knowledge in the ins and outs of economists and cheap politics, South Africa politicians have always blamed someone else for South Africa's ills. With a population with that standard of education (compare to Zimbabwe's) the people are ready to accept any explanation that the lack of jobs, housing etc is because of foreigners. This Stone Age Economic principle will take South Africa back to the Stone Age...Fast.

I call on the South African Government to take immidiate and disive action to stop this madness. The world has watched for so long for Mbeki to play a neutral role in finding a peacefull role to Zimbabwe's Crisis. To kill someone because they are a foreigner is repulsive. You have blood on your hands...innocent blood, Mr President.

I can go on and on..but I will refer anyone who is interested to read George Owerll's Animal Farm loosely based on the Russion Revolution.

"No sooner do you remove one evil, does one other evil raise its head, we must smash that head with a sledgehammer, South Africans, get some education. They say you don't know where you are going unless you know where you are coming from".

by Patrick T. Mugoni on May 19, 2008, 7:29 pm
Many lives were lost to liberate South Africa. As a war hero who fought for Mozambique, Zimbabwe & South African, I cannot believe the political leadership of ANC can just watch while the very people who supported the liberation of South Africa are being murdered by primitive politically moivated gangs. After the war in Zimbabwe, I personally organised ANC solidarity campaigns, even organized students at the UZ to forgo weekend meals to fund the liberation of South Africa. The liberation of South Africa is incomplete until iTRIBALISM, and all forms of BANTUSTANISMS and apatheid are eliminated from the minds of its citizens. Today its fashionable to blame Mugabe and Zimbabweans for the situation in South Africa. Before South Africa was freed how many Zimbabweans, Malawians and Mozambicans and Zambiians worked and served the former regime and in the mines. Today without the hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans & other Africans ( black, white, coloureds, indians etc ) who work as professionals South Africa would be importing skilled people from ASIA at a great cost. The collapse of the Zimbabwean industrial base has been good news for SA it means fincreased expeorts even of basic commodities. Comrade Zuma, you were praised much for publicly criticising Mugabe and the Zimbabwe regime - dont you think it should be time to do it much more directly and even to go and combat these thugs in Johannesburg. They killed lucky Dube and they have already killed 32 of the future of Africa and they will probably kill many South Africans.

Let the world know this South Africa was lliberated by Africans, How many SWAPO fighters died in ANgola, in Ovambo, many mozambicans died and how many Zimbabweans died from direct apartheid bulllets ? How many people have been mentally decapitated by the apartheid regime yet Africans stood by our ANC, PAC etc brothers. Time will tell - wait until MBEKI goes and we shall remind you of your UNGRATEFULness. Did we chase you from Zim, Zam, Moz, Tanz, Bots, when you fled apartheid ? did we kill you or burn you ? Were South Africans not living in Mount Pleasant, Borrowdale,Avondale, Mabelreign, Hatifiled, Waterfalls ? Did some of you not even betray and bomb ANC offices in Harare and Bulawayo ? Did we give you too much hospitality that we deserve DEATH Sentence and condemnation. THINK & REMEMBER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by phibian on May 20, 2008, 12:16 am
South African got the most of support from other African countries during their days of strugle, and refugees were accomodated, and assisted, all this has been forgotten and they pay back by abusing and burning alive other africans today.

No wander they have been refering themselves as South Africans and the rest of africa. Poverty is bitting every part of africa, and in my view leadership is limping, and too busy marshalling wealth and gold while the poor turn to each other reminiscent of other african countries. South africa is a time bomb, what will happen after the african foreigners leave? Let SA adress the real issues rather than bitting the bush.........
by Macharia on May 20, 2008, 2:17 am
xenophobia is taking over our Country. I cannot even believe that some of our South Africans are taking part in these cruel activities and yes we call ourselves Proudly South African and we say that S.A is a free country. Dont we have leniency to realize that our own families could get into this mess if we continue.
If we don’t stop this our Country will end up like Zimbabwe… Where is our president in all of this demolition that is taking place…? No one speaks about the president.. Why? I want to know what is he doing about this…
by Elmain on May 20, 2008, 5:48 am
If black southafricans were killed during apartheid, we wouldnt have black people in the country. its time for them to re visit whatever they are doing and realize the presence of GOD.
by erick nestory on May 20, 2008, 7:21 am
When people face tough time it is always a easy scapegoat to refer to the good old times and I am sure many now say that under the old government with all its faults at least they made sure that there was the rule of law. The pictures I see now however reminds me of just those days in the past when white people lived in 1st world conditions in towns while the townships where burning and people were set alight. What is happening is tripping this country of our pride and dignity and perhaps we should not be hosting a prestigious event such as the world cup soccer. In addition perhaps we should not be led by a bunch of freedom fighters who bleed this country dry while the massess suffer. If this carry on we will soon face the scorn of the rest of the world. Aliens also have the same rights we have and if gov.managed the situation from the start we wouldn't be facing this fiasco. Instead of killing the poor refugees we should be holding the corrupt officials in government responsible. Sadly I believe that in this country many more innocent people will die while government is simply good at giving excuses.

by Malous de Bukavu on May 20, 2008, 8:52 am
Poor South Africans, short sighted and poor memory. Less than 15 years ago your men were hosted in the rest of African countries, we donated even blood for your freedom fighters, shame on you. Unless this is stoped, I pray to God that the boers come back and lead the country with apatheid. May be this is impossible but I remind you that after you have burnt all your foreign black fellows from African countries you will start burning each other Zulu against Khosa etc. I appeal to SA government to stop this violence, and remind its people about where they came from. Shame on you.
by sungusia on May 20, 2008, 9:15 am
South African's, mhhh ..... very bad!!remember that, what goes around comes around. you should sit down and read the History of your country. Stop that evil, God doesnt lk that. please.

Shame! I think the blacks who are in support of these killings need help! They need to check out themselves and find out whether they are animals without instincts or human beings!!
by Mulox on May 20, 2008, 10:02 am
Saddening. So saddening in a country with such potential and passion in some parts, but so much apathy and ignorance in others.

by shafiki on May 20, 2008, 12:16 pm
When Mugabe stole the election with the help of his friend Mbeki, the township dwellers saw another 4 years competing with desperate 'refugees'. They have had enough. This is their response. Thabo Mbeki alone is to blame for this mess. GO BACK TO LUSAKA, MBEKI!!
by Wim on May 20, 2008, 12:44 pm
South AFricans, blacks are waiting for you one day, with such brainless heads im sure u will have violence in your country and will flee to our countries, i promise you other countries will do what you are doing to them

I think at this point were brothers are killing brothers. its time all africans should pray for God Mecry & love. Do we really Care for eachother. South Africans also need help, they also need love & caring from us foreigners , aslo from eachother. We have our families in Zimbabwe and other African countries, going through Difficult times, caused by our own,,,,Who do you really blame, South Africans because it happenned here. what about our own countries, other African leaders,, Its just an awaken call to all Africans. our leaders has done nothing but put us under shame. Life has no meaning. We all just have to Pray, pray and pray for God Grace. May God touch each & everyone involve with this devilish act.

by polloz on May 20, 2008, 3:01 pm
What 'black' South Africans are doing (I better be honest of the color) is nothing more than proving to the rest of the world that Africans are descendants of monkeys!! No real human brain can support such atrocities and crazyness! These never happened during the boers regime, and look now, this is the result of giving blacks power into once a very beautiful land! Time will tell us if South African will not end up like what Zimbabwe is now. God forbid!!
by St. Cklay on May 20, 2008, 3:16 pm

I am a South African abroad and I feel like vommiting when I think I have to return to South Africa. I am disgusted with our government. What a waste of a beautiful country. Why cant the bloody government build a damm prison in the desert and let the pigs work in the hot sun digging for gold with limited damm water!!! And if they want to escape shoot them or let them die of dehydration. Im sure the whole country will donate towards building a prison.
I am so sick of crime, innocent people dying for what!!!?? Just because our president is scared of the damm crimminals!!!....sigh...I feel helpless...sigh How do we knock some sense into our president's head?

Reading these horror stories is painful. Lee good for you, I would do anything to go to australia as well. I have to return to SA back to the same scary shit, sleeping with my eyes open. Waking up with every little noise or every time the dog barks. Going to bed around 9pm waking at 6am dog tired, wishing for a good nights rest. After living so freely abroad, having the luxury of been able to ride a bike as a mean of transportation, which would get taken away by gun point from me in SA, now i have to go back to this mess. I hope the world cup gets removed.

by Natalie on May 21, 2008, 12:44 pm

I'm appalled by these barbaric acts commited by our fellow South Africans! But even more by these hatefull comments that have been allowed to be posted on this website. When will a white be allowed to call himself an African? When we he/she no longer carry the title of a foreigner?!...

The mentality of some of these people are pathetic, the reason why people are being necklaced and mauled at the moments is becuase of this mentality. What ever happened to "South Africa belongs to those who live in it"???

If this is the current situation in South Africa then I strongly advise that the World Cup Football Tournament be hosted somewhere else other thatn in this country as the situation is not bearable.
Initialy I liked South Africa and wished to work there, and I believe most people (black and white) were happy to work and share experience with South African in the post-apartheid era. It is a pit to discover that these people have turned to be monsters, devils! This is absurd!
By doing this, South Africans are closing their own doors to the outside world. It is surprizing that citizens of their neighbouring countries who sacrified their time, money, energy and their life for the sake of South African freedom are now the target of all evils done!
Where will South Africans go when political crisis arises again

by Nelson N Mwambala on May 23, 2008, 1:14 pm
I am so glad that now I as a South African know what the non South Afrcans say about us. Yes it is sad what is happening. Never had I thouhgt I will see a person burning Iam disappointed myself however, South Africans have had their share of problems and we would like to solve our problems alone now, there is too many people that we do not understand and we do not even know that, if, alone we have problems or it is the combination. we are unhappy about a lot of things [1] the influx of drugs that have traced to foreign people and serial killers who have also been traced to foreign people. Yes we are nowhere near perfect but, now it is time we get to know how bad things are within and among the South Africans.
