If we new this is how South Africans look at other nationals, we would not have let them stay in our countries during their struggle. At least they now know what to expect when they come to our countries in future during their time of need. We will have no mercy. Mark these words

I am distrurbed by Felix Moyo's comment. We need to create solidarity in opposing the violence. His threatening comment is fuel to the fire. Please let us stand together to build peace. I am a South African and I stand against zenophobia and violence. "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing."

by Plagu3 on May 19, 2008, 12:48 pm
Shock and horror, that people can actually bring themselves to do this to innocent victims, but then again, they are the ones raping, murdering innocent people every day in this country. I am truly not a proud South African today. I am sad to say that I live in this beautiful country, and now, given the chance, will be leaving with my family as soon as possible.

I cant believe what I'm seeing...it really disgusts and angers me to see such people engaging in such cruel acts!

They say it is the white folks whom are leaving this country...but with my fellow black South Africans resorting to this kind of behaviour, maybe it's time other sane black folk leave to save face.

I'm trully broken-hearted...

To think we call this the Rainbow Nation is truly shocking. I hope the world is exposed to this and soon realise that South Africans wake up to headlines of Murder, Rape and violence every day of their living lives. I am losing faith in this country at a rapid rate which saddens me to no end.
by Alan on May 19, 2008, 2:41 pm
I am sorry to say but God save Africa. How can someone just burn a person and find sleep later in the day. We are worse than human. South Africans should sit and think hard before its too late to raclaim themslves.

I am very saddened by what is happenning in SA. I am disgusted and it does not leave me wwith pride to be referred to as a South African today. A word of caution: today it is foreigners but tomorrow and sooner it will be everyone against everyone based on racial and ethnic origins.
by Ndongeni Dumakude on May 19, 2008, 3:16 pm
Exactly what has come over South Africa? Are these the brothers and sisters our tax money was being spent on while they were in exile? We looked after them well here in Zambia, and they endangered our lives! Some of our Zambian comrades died because of living next to these brothers and sisters, who are now BUTCHERING us!!! God help us all!!!! Do we need another Truth and Reconciliation Commission? Dr. Kaunda and Comrade Mandela, the ball is in your court. Can't say much, because it is choking....SHAME to the Rainbow nation. One would think we are in a global village and therefore, borders should not matter. Will United States of Africa really work? Let's wait and see....

I am in disbelief that a country with one of the greatest constitutions in the world can allow such savagism. This is improper and these inhumane animals should be punished for what they are doing to our brothers and sisters from other African countries. Same on the government!!
by orchid on May 19, 2008, 4:18 pm
what kind of fools are doing these kind of things?
it's sad to see that people forget so quick their own misery. Maybe it's better for you folks to bring back the apartheid. They have to put you apart on the Antartica.

I am saddened and distraught over this unfortunate turn of events. When we as
Africans - and here it is all Governments civil society combined- adopt a dismissive stance on the underlying factors of disaffection,we must not forget that many wretched Africans have borne decades nay centuries of exploitation and oppression.Yet in the absence of redress ,hopelessness, despair, and feelings s of betrayal stoke the volcanoes of violence. As a former student abroad , an anti apartheid campaigner and now a resident in an African country not my own, I have experienced first hand ,the targeted scorn and spite of misdirected aggression when the oppressed become oppressors.
The irony of it all is that we tend to lash out at fellow Africans without analyzing the real causes of our wretchedness! However, this is not to sweep under the carpet all those clannish, well heeled expatriates, or the myopic policies that overlook qualified locals while hiding behind pretexts of race , gender and ethnic origins !How does one deal with this black on black xenophobia in our own countries? Is the continent becoming one big unhappy camp for the internally displaced, suffering from Acquired Income Deficiency Syndrome?

To my South African brothers and sisters - seek for forgiveness for it is sin to spill a brothers blood. You will one day seek their helping hands for no one is self sufficient. Your enemy is not your african sisters and brothers who gave you refuge in the dark days of apartheid. It is ignorance..fight that instead

Roll on 2010 World Cup. Prospective soccer visitors had better beware. That country does not accept foreigners. They got their cue from Mr Mbeki...when he said "there is no crisis in Zimbabwe". I am reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography "A Long Walk To Freedom" and these are the same prejudices he suffered. Reverse apartheid. Shame on a powerful nation.

Its quite absurd for such a heinous act orchestrated by the so called black brothers who were shelterd by the same people they are trying to exterminate. I really regret as a Ugandan whose country did all within its means to liberate S.Africa from the apartheid regime. Shame on you all who are behind those acts. No wonder you exhibited your barbaric behavours when you killed an Icon in names of Lucky Dube. May God reward you in the same currency. RIP ye all that were murdured.

Absolutely agree with most of the comments posted. We have recently moved from South Africa to Scotland and have had second thoughts as to whether we made the correct choice. Looking at these horrific images we definitely have. The rest of the world sit back and moralize from afar but do absoloutely nothing. I am afraid that Africa is a forgotten continent with no hope for the future. I am desperately afraid for my family and friends that remain. What future do the youth have. They are taught to hate and have no values or respect for others. If this was white on black would the rest of the world intervene? Moving from my beloved country has been the hardest thing my husband and I have done but we are one of the fortunate few who can. I can only pray for those left behind. God help you all!

Today I am ashamed to call myself an African. Is this what we have reduced ourselves to, exacting senseless attacks of violence on our own. South African is not a continent on its own - and even if it was, that is no excuse. We should all be ashamed!
by Busika on May 19, 2008, 8:10 pm
Maybe this could be a wake up call for Zims in South Africa and elsewhere that we need to go back and sort out the crisis in Zimbabwe. Why have we allowed ourselves to be the laughing stock of other nations
by Themba on May 19, 2008, 8:11 pm
My country Tanzania , one of the poorest country in the world , refuged thousands of south africans during apartheid . We welcomed them with open heart and share with them the little we had. I am completely flabergasted with these images and I believe this acts are being done by few people.
by Peter on May 19, 2008, 8:12 pm
No wonder why white south africans were butchering you like flies during the apartheid era.Its because you are so thick, emptied minded human beings who dont know where you came from. Its disgusting, and your barbarism has got no place in the civilized society. To you Mbeki, this is a wake call and stop being a foolish idiot supporting dictators like Mugabe. Most of the affected individuals are my fellow countryman,Zimbaweans who ran away from Mugabe's repressive government. But foolishly, you Mbeki you tell the world that all is well in Zimbabwe.Thats why you lost to Zuma because you are useless

This wave of brutal violence against innocent people who are utterly defenceless is so disgusting, shocking and unforgivable.

They are only attacking the weakest in society (even blind people if you can comprehend that) and just because they are not from SA . Funny, I don't see or hear of them attacking ANY foreign Russian, Chinese, Nigerian etc. gangs who are armed themselves because they know they will fight back. No they only target the weakest and the innocent.

What COWARDS!
by LBH on May 19, 2008, 8:24 pm
these are not shacks! these are relatively affluent houses - ugly, brutal, barbarous people. Shame on you! You defile the people who fought for your freedom, you deserve to live in cages for your virulence, your minds are your bantustans, your ghettos- your actions are unworthy of Africa.
by dcr on May 19, 2008, 8:26 pm
as if blindness isn't bad enough the feral underclass shows it can go no lower, those who have no dignity steal the dignity of others, when politicians who should know better throw bottles of urine instead of debating, cause affray instead of discussion in their OWN caucuses, we know that this country is destined for the sewer, it is WRONG for the ANC to condemn anarchic behaviour when it has set the example in it's own meetings and conferences-Cry the beloved country.

This meaningless, cruel, butchering of innocent people is disgraceful. It is sad to read about and painful to see. As a black South African who grew up in post1994 South Africa, these pictures look like those horrible pictures of 1976. This time, though, it is black South Africans who are in the wrong, who are the murderers.

As I post this comment, I'm thinking of my best friends in South Africa: from Zimbabwe, from Mozambique, from Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Burundi, Eritrea. I don't know what I would - could - say to them, except a heartfelt apology for a South Africa I cannot recognise as my South Africa.

Borders are horrible things because they create the impression that we are different from each other: colonialism did this during the partitioning of our continent, apartheid did this by creating tribal homelands and a 'black' and 'white' South Africa - now, a South Africa that went through all that has the most inhumane policies towards refugees. Some of us have long complained about these policies. AS SOUTH AFRICANS, we have complained about the press' representations of fellow Africans as 'illegal immigrants' and 'aliens' - labels which, incidentally, are only used to refer to AFRICANS not from South Africa. We have raised concern about derogatory terms used to refer to fellow Africans. We have campaigned for a revised history, arts and culture syllabus that see's South Africa's political and cultural past and struggles as part of the continent's past and struggles.

This is only what I and others can contribute - as educators, historians and cultural activists. This may not help the present situation, obviously, (it would be naive to think so) but, it may nurture future South Africans who appreciate the brotherhood and sisterhood of others, and respects others' fundamental humanity. BUT: these future generations should also be protected BY THE GOVERNEMENT from HIV/AIDS, be assured basic health care, be assured a living wage, be assured access to education. The struggle is therefore a very large societal one - one CANNOT and SHOULD not be separated from the other.

An old anti-apartheid slogan used to say: "An injury to one is an injury to all". We should retain this forceful statement, and mobilise it to make sense of this painful tragedy.

As South Africans (those who have written on this board), we are ashamed. We are disgusted. We should, however, also move beyond these emotions (which only focus on our own reactions) and DO SOMETHING - EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN CAPACITY!!! Instead of being ashamed, we MUST SHAME THESE MURDERERS. I am still proudly South African because I believe in the idea of South Africa: it is my belief in this idea that makes these xenophobic slaughtering sad and disheartening and angering; it is belief in this idea that should motivate us to act.

It is only because things were so unlivable at home that they came here in the first place. We are SUPPOSED to be the rainbow nation remember. We achieved the peaceful transition from oppression to freedom through the constant help and support of our neighbouring African countries remember. Do these things not mean anything anymore? Now that we are no longer oppressed have we forgotten how to share? What we are doing to the innocent people here is worse than what the apartheid govt did - I can only pray that the human race suddenly becomes extinct for to be humane these days is to be a monster

As a white South African, having grown up under the Apartheid system, shielded and oblivious to the grose human violations that were taking place and shocked and saddened when its true extent was exposed by the Truth and Reconcilliation Committee, I was excited and positive about the changes that a free and democratic South Africa would bring. I am now deeply disappointed and ashamed at what is happening in my country. There is so much hatred - black on white, white on black, indian on black, black on black. All human beings have a basic need to love and to be loved. All life is sacred. No creed or colour is above any other. I say this to all those out there condemning the Zimbabweans, Malawians and others....there but by the grace of God go us all. Should South Africa eventually go the same route as Zims and we are forced to flee our borders to one of our neighbouring states, will we too be beaten and burnt alive for simply being foreign? Let's hope our sister African nations are more welcoming to us than we have been to them.

I think as much this violence is wrong, it is also wrong for south africans to suffer in there own country. Goverment is to blame for all of this. I terms of housing foreign nationals can't get housing before south africans do, the source of this attacks is mainly social issues. South africans are staying in shacks and the foreigners are now occupying the RDP houses its wrong. Goverment is to blame.
Down with this violence !!!!!!! BY THE WAY I AM ZULU
by Mbele Gee on May 20, 2008, 8:59 am
People are frustrated with a government that steals lots and delivers little. Their reaction is the same as during the apartheid era when the necklace was used to take out the frustration of oppresion on presumed collaborators. That was under a racist oppressive regime but the overall view is the same though, a few priviledged people enriching themselves at the expense of the majority, how many BEE benefactors do you know personaly, will the corrupt clerk at a rural home affairs office be replaced. Will the change of guard in the ANC leadership change this situation, I doubt it, it will just bring in a new wave of fat cats who fiddle whilst Joburg burns! Most of those riding high on the Zunami have a track record of self enrichment and are just looking for a second bite at the cake. If the stealing and corruption doesn't stop, Never mind foreigners the next target of the looting and burning could be the waBenzi! or even just those government officials that ask a months wages for an ID book. Frustration amongst the majority of South Africans is very high and ready to explode as the current situation shows. Be warned uMashini wami could be pointing at the new oppressors before too long.

this violence is completely unnecessary. Unfortunately people perpetrating this babaric, uncooth, actions in Sinqobile for instance are Zulu speaking from the Hostel. Not all zulu's are behind this but those who cannot use thier heads and hands to put bread on their tables. These mostly men depend on the government to maintain their children, so they do not what it is to look at your children at night sleeping without food. These foreigners whether illegal or not, when they left their countries knew that they might return home or may not. they have been through harsh times intheir countries. they know waht war is and if w as South Africans want to take them back to those times, they will do so. Please, let us not provoke snakes in their holes. theyhave nothing to loose. Can you imagine what they went throough to find themselves here. they have pasees though terrorist, crocodiles, barbed wires and border soldiers. Who are we?

themselves as Africans. This
rampage is bringing our hard-fought democracy in to disrepute. By the way Africans have become the laughing stocks of they colonial masters. They are saying "Look at these monkeys they are butchering one another" Sies!

I just never imagined that a human being could behave in such an inhumane way towards a fellow brother. It was especially surprising to see a woman laughing at a burning man, a woman that can give birth to another human being!! Things can also go bad in South Africa, if that happens, I doubt if other African countries will be willing to lend a hand. It is important to know that these acts will go down in history, people will always remember. During that apartheid years South Africans cried and other African brothers gave them a shoulder to lean on, obviously all this has been forgotten. I just pray that God will pour his spirit in our hearts and that we may value human life.

by J. Miya on May 20, 2008, 10:50 am
My God what have we become? I have elected to stay in this Country to be part of a solution to unemployment and the pervasive negative sentiment that exists here. I think I may have made a mistake. The government must now take responsibility for the fact that their "quietly diplomatic" approach has assisted in destabilising the entire SADC region. My heart bleeds for Zimbabweans persecuted in their own country and now persecuted here. Where do they go? If they had a democracy and a stable economy at home they wouldn't be here. They don't have a hope at home and our Government seems unable or unwilling to assist in giving them hope by telling Mugabe to f*ck off. I feel that Mbeki should hang his head in shame. The blood of the 24 dead is on his hands as well. I understand the our people's anger but I feel that it is misdirected. They should now direct their anger at the regime responsible for this unholy mess and hit them where it hurts - the polling station.

Just what has gotten into the heads of these headless, heartless South Africans. I know that it is not all South Africans here, but a few bad nuts will contaminate all. It's hard, really hard, to imagine that these are the people who are where they are today because of the people they are murdering! Their current president, Mr Thabo Mbeki, spent years in an impoverished location called M'tendere in Lusaka, Zambia during their struggles. Imagine if we did the stupid things they are doing now. A word of warning to our South African brothers and sisters: Don't think you/your country will always be as rich as you are/it is today. At least you have a fair idea of what other people will think of treating you like in your hour of reckoning!

In the 1930's facism swept Europe and Jewish people found themselves beaten, murdered, raped and thrown from their homes. Nazism arose and the holocaust followed... These scenes are not far off from the hatred and idiocy that was present in the people that scape-goated Jewish families. This is similar...this is a facism of our (South Africa's) creation. We should be ashamed!

What is South Africa coming to? I really don't understand. Racism is rife in this country. I am a not so proudly South African. Foriegners come to our country for safety and from now on, where do they run to? Are they suppose to go back home, to their contries? It is so sad that our South Africans say that foreigners come here and steal jobs. This is not true because our South Africans only want the easy way out. They rather act as criminals then to wake up in the morning and having to earn a decent living. Do we have to be violent? Now come on South Africa, let us be civil. We say that we are being discriminated upon. But dont we think that we are doing the same?

I am sitting at my desk, looking at these pictures, and I am crying. These people came to SA with dreams, and they are lucky to leave here alive.
Who gave us this right? To kill and destroy others?
This is a sad sad day for my country, and this nightmare has just begun. Where will this end?
This is going to have far-reaching effects on us as a nation, I shudder to think about the repurcutions.

So sad that we have dummies in South Africa. By the way, ethnic conflicts are following because we have dummies. Do you call yourself South Africans? No you are not. Black on black will continue since the rich history of this continent is not known.

CAN ANYBODY ANSWER?

Yes, it is a product of our history, but that does not excuse it - I believe that this behaviour is a direct result of non-delivery on promises made by our government in power. When you have been told that you are owed all kinds of things and you sit back and wait for it - frustration and anger comes to the surface when you don't get it. These poor immigrants, who only want a better life, are prepared to work for what they want to achieve, and this just adds to the frustration of those who are waiting for the government they voted in, to deliver. Perhaps the govt. needs to think seriously about how to change this mindset. And, yes, we should be ashamed, very ashamed.

As someone who's travelled the lenghth and breath of our beautiful continent, I'm dismayed and disgusted at the level of hatred directed at our fellow Africans.

The recent spate of killings and attacks are a shame and drawback to our thriving democracy and poses a serious threat to national security, economic development and African unity.

I'm purturbed that our law enforcement agencies and the political leadership have allowed this senseless campaign to go on for so many days.

it's also questionable that these acts erupted right under the noses of the National Intelligence Agency.

all I can say is that many things are at stake now for South Africa. We are just months away from hosting 2010, and then this is allowed to thrive? Mr President, please use some iron fist methods to clamp down on this monster called Xenophobia. Let's not allow our human rights culture to blind us and lead us into hell. Please act Mr President and dispel the myth that your are a lameduck president.

They gave you food, work, right of passage, safety and shelter. Your machetes, shamboks, rape, terror and mass violence are murdering and sending intoexile, the very spirit of ubuntu. There is an odd similsrity between what I see in these images in South Africa and post-election images from Zimbabwe. Are these South Africans inflicting this pain, or Zimbabwean CIO or youth brigades trying to destabilise South Africa. I cant tell the difference between ethnic cleansing and ethnic cleansing. Was "drive the foreigners out" not a Mugabe statement?

by Werner Pereira on May 20, 2008, 3:29 pm
I suspect that this violence is a diversionary tactic hatched by Mugabe and Mbeki recently in Harare to deflect attention from the mess these two dictators have created in Zimbabwe. SADC needs to urgently assist polulations of the two countries by pushing these blood-thirsty out of positions of leadership because these two men are not leaders but rulers and dictators.
by Manomano on May 20, 2008, 3:31 pm
We have an election coming up in 2009 - God willing that the country hasn't crashed and burned by then - the best way to tell this government how you feel is not to vote for them - BUT if you do not see another party you would like to vote for - GO to the polls on voting day and SPOIL your paper by putting a cross against more than one face/party. These have to be counted and published as spoiled papers, which is a better form of protest than not voting at all.

Very sad moment for Africa as a continent, probably explains a few things about our conducts and way of life, but this truly reflect the lack of unity and cooperation that instigated colonisation and apatheid in the first place. It is a poor against poor war, and the perpetrators seem completely blinded to realise that open borders among neighbouring countries helped to ochestrate majority rule in South Africa. This is the work of dull criminals and not patriotic South Africans and the law should take its course to restore order and bring South Africa back to its rainbow image.

I am horrified by the inhumanity to man being played out in South Africa. We are supposed to be civilised but it appears that some of our own people are mirroring crimes committed by ZANU PF in Zimbabwe. We are proving to the world that we are no better than our neighbours in that we cannot control injustice in our country. It is now time for our armed forces to take control of these areas and put an end to the unprovoked attacks and murders. Stop using rubber bullets. "Live by the gun, die by the gun", I say. What would you do if you went to another country where you believed you could improve your life and those dearest to you and you had to pay with your life because of someone's insane perception regarding the threat you are. Who gives you the right to play God?! President Mbeki, give our armed forces more authority to put a stop to this genecide - please!!! What are we telling the rest of the world, if we cannot bring an emergency situation such as this under control? If I were a foreigner planning to come to South Africa for the World Cup in 2010, I would think twice - would I be safe there? I think not. Bring back the death penalty - don't waste the tax payers' money on giving free accommodation to criminals who will be out on the street committing the same crimes or worse, over and over again. Call for a state of emergency!!

To our brothers and sisters to the north, we love you. We hate the sick and inhuman part of ourselves and our country that have perpetrated these unspeakable acts. No one but ourselves can save ourselves and we so often fail so terribly.

Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe,... all the rest of the Africa nations, and the tribes within and the lands and peoples and traditions, we learn from you and need you to help us understand our failings. Pray that we carry our shame to a peaceful future with ourselves and with you. We are desperately sorry, disgraced and debased.

Forgive us but do not pause in your reminders and taunts - we are cowardly for not demanding that our leaders be with us and not insulated in secure compounds. For not challenging their lies, arrogance and inhumanity we led ourselves here. Again. An inhuman nation. Remind us of what we ought to be. And pray we succeed.

Cry the beloved country! Did we ever say, Never, never again? This violence is condemned in the strongest possible terms but because it is so insane and barbarric we need to know what really triggered this spate of violence. Untill such time and while working non stop and urgently to annalylise the insane phenomenon this inhuman action must be stopped with total official government force by deploying the military forces. There is a criminal murderous element that has to be accosted, but then the poor and jobless situation of human beings has to be addressed Now! Government has no more excuses - all the maschinery of the state must be engaged to address these inhuman ugly faces of poverty (sickness, unemployment, mysery and hunger, housing etc.). The people have suffred enough, they need quality dignified life. It is in the first place the duty of government who has the resources, but it is aalso the responsibility of society and the private sphere. We have to be creative and inovative in creating a better life for all that live in the RSA; we have a collective sense of the bette life and we have the resources to make it work, individually and collectively! But first we need a change of attitude, a change of heart - a heart that cares, a society that cares - for God cares!
by Karlie on May 21, 2008, 12:14 pm
It was almost inevitable that such will take place. The porous borders, lack of control by the Government and the fight for very limited resources among the poorest. I however still believe that South Africans are humanitarian and blame the government solely for driving the people to such lenghts. The government does not have its ear on the ground. It is a matter of time, before there is another brawl, this time over high priced decent houses-instead of these makeshifts that the middle income earners cannot even qualify for.

Train up a proper police force is a good place to start. Should a person not hang or at least spend 25 years behind bars for burning another human being alive. The nazi's used to carry out similar attrocities not so. All the very best of luck SA, you are going to need it
by steve on May 21, 2008, 12:51 pm
South Africans have a very short memory! They should remember how it was during apatheid and how other African brothers sheltered them during their time of need. Talk of a third force involved in this violence is unwarranted. Blame should be with Thabo Mbeki and his government for several reasons. Firstly failure to meet their promises after independence, failure to act on Zimbabwe to arrest the deteriorating situation which has led to an influx of Zimbabweans and finally failure to act on the brutality of their police on foreigners. How can you expect their police to protect the same people they usually brutalise. Its so double faced!!!
by tindo on May 21, 2008, 12:57 pm
i dont knw wat these lunatics think they are. But i just wanna say that wat they are doing to their fellow africans is inhuman and should be condemned by the whole world. Just because they have insecurities and anger does not mean they have any right to unleash anguish upon people who are not strong enough to protect themselves. They have to remember the time of apartheid, it was Africa which stood by the black people of SA some of countries like Tanzania even went further by allowing ANC and other SA parties to work and organise their activities from their land. God bless Africa.
History will judge them for their missdeeds.

Its very interesting how worldwide we as Black people so often turn against one another, often with such brutal nonsensical violence. White supremist racists had their dirty hands around the necks of Black people in SA. Many of these White murderers and torturers have never been brought to justice and are still walking the streets free as if they never did anything wrong. Yet Black people attack Black people; self hatred. Hell if you want to attack someone why not go after some of those guilty Afrikaners who did such horrible things to Black people? Go after all the foreigners that have been buying up all the prime SA land and the White citizens that stole your land and still have it. Go after the SA govt that has allowed this! Insist that the SA govt take responsibility for NOT having proper land reform and allowing much of the land to be sold at extreme profits. The Zim brotha didn't steal your land or torture you. Black folk one day have got to learn to trust one another and work together as a people. If you really want to take action do it in a civil peaceful way. Know who the real enemy is.
by stephen meeks on May 21, 2008, 3:43 pm
Even the SA government is xenophobic. I know of many Black Africans who were turned down when they applied for vacant positions, despite their immense and rich experience and their qualifications. In government circles, instructions have been given to keep vacant positions vacant until there is genuine South African to take up these positions. White and Chinese are recruited. Identity documentations given to permanent residents and African who acquired citizenship are just empty shells. It does not provide them with right. Many of the skilled balck Africans who studied in South African universities went to Canada, USA, Australia, etc where they have very good positions and salaries. In the meantime, Soth Africa lacks their expertise.

Will South Africans be brave and proud enough to look at other African in the eyes? Thabo Mbeki speaks of the African Renaissance when it enables his BEE friends to secure mines exploitation in the DRC, Mali, Guinea-Conakry and markets fpr MTN in Nigeria, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, etc.

We African, we took note of all this. We paid the high price in our fight against apartheid. We are paying the high price living with the very same people we help to liberate. As rightly said "the tall man is never tall enoug to pick up all the items on the shelves"

One day or other, South Africa will need us.

1. Declare a State of Emergency to ensure there are no further incidences of this nature
2. Appointment of a National Security Task Force to deal with this case made up of independent credible people with backgrounds in law, civil society, defense & security and law and human rights
3. Appointment of a Commission of Enquiry into the Xenophorbic attacks
4. Establishment of special paramilitary police unit to police and patrol affected areas
5.Establishment of a Special Court system to deal with all the criminals and mruders. The South African government should introduce a system of disarming criminals, reviewing gun laws introduced during apartheid era to ensure people do not have to carry guns around. Let me tell you something, we had some admiration for South Africa but alas what has just happened is evidence that
President Mbeki and his successor should seriously think of retraining the SAP officers even purging the police of criminal elements. More funds should be allocated for police duties - its necessary if you want to keep the World Cup in SouthAfrica.

Establish 24 hour surveilance to rid South Africa of guns, knives and weapons of any type. These weapons should not be found in any urban settlement and any community place in South Africa. Take my advice and live or ignore it and perish

South African farmers, you may have your own security but frankly if there is any invasion of farms by any of these thugs I am sure the results will be more horrific than the Rwanda genocide.

My advice to you FOREIGN citizens, whatever deregatory name they call you. Its time for you to do the following
If you live in isolated places please find yourself go and live close to other foreigners. Never move alone, move in groups. If you can put your resources to rent a bigger, safer place do it for the next few months, your life and future is more important whatever money you are saving.

Christian leaders, we will be praying everyday at 2am South African time, please we should take the next 8 days beginning 23 to ask God's intervention.

Expose all the killers, broadcast their names, pictures and evidence and South Africa will be a better place to live.

We expect that all those who have killed whether indiviidually and collectively should be send to prison. Rwanda has a very good system for dealing with those who commiitted Genocide.

I encourage those who know the criminals, their names and addresses and have any form of evidence to collect it and retain it for use in prosecuting the criminals and murders. In Rwanda, Gacaca tries those who have harboured, supported and have complicity in the murder of innnocent civilians.

The leaders of South Africa, whether black, Indian, Coloured or white should develop a programme based on findings of Commission of Enquiry to reorient the citizens.

Reading all comments and observing media reports, et al. I am not surprised by this latest turn of events. ALL countries in Africa are burning or have burned with the same Xenophobic attacks at one point in their history. It is just sad that we African's don't learn from the dreadful past. NEVER HAVE. This is why we send our children out of South Africa (last known for its sense of decency and democracy) and all other African conflict zones within Africa. How sad that we are reduced to this, but then where you have a corrupt and incompetent ruling heads of government what do you expect the subjects of the land to behave like. Sadly, Africa will eventually become a Zoo continent, where tourists will just fly in to see the "animals" and then fly out again. As for 2010, Good luck! This is so not a good example and I'd like to see the Fan Zones.

Being a journalist in Kenya it is sad but alot of what is happening in South Africa is very similar to what happened here in Kenya early this year. If the situation is not arrested quickly it will have a devastating effect on South Africa, how you view each other and how you are viewd by the outside world.

I left South Africa 10 years ago, and have always been Proudly South African. Never before have I been afraid to return to my homeland. What has happened tou our beloved country, what has happened to the toleration of all people in the Rainbow Nation? Come on South Africa, make me proud to be one of you again!

With a wry smile on my face, a tear runs down my face. I smile at the thought that tomorrow will be the day when the black South Africans will look to us their 'neighbours' when the Boers are fed up with the ways the country is being governed and take up arms. Be rest assured that we will pay you in kind! We gave you a safe place to run to when the whiteman used to kick your butt. Now this is the thanks we get? In Zimbabwe, we had millions of Malawians and Zambians illegally but we never killed anyone of them. Infact we embraced them like they were our own. In the 90s we had hundreds of thousands Mozambican refugges. We built them camps, fed and clothed them. This is not the first time mass emigration has happened in southern Africa and its definitely not bunique to SA. Your country is on the highway to being a banana republic like Zambia and Malawi did, and how our Zimbabwe is now. We will all be waiting to spill your blood in revenge for our brothers. The worst thing is that even though i have never been to SA and never will, i have always looked at it as my second home because of i speak the same language as most SAcans and bear the same name and surname as many over there. What goes around, comes around and remember what Lucky Dube said, 'be good to the people you meet on your way up because you meet the same people on your way down! That the ways it is!

This has really gone out of hand: i mean really now, violence is NOT the answer and we know that. If people are angry iwth the Government , taking it out on the "foreingers" wont help them with anything. This is bad publicity for South Africa and its bad now with the 2010 World Cup coming. During Aparheid , South Africans fled to other neighbouring countries to seek shelter and hide themselves, and now that other countried need us, is this how we treat them. Now some of us are even scared to walk in the streets just incase we are mistaken to be an "outsider"... I read a comment made by one of the people here and he was saying about Zulus being blamed for this and it being wrong, yes i agree with him, i cant sit here and point fingers at my people cos that will NOT solve my problem, WE NEED TO FIND A WAY TO DEAL WITH THIS , FAST!!!!

This is one of the worst situations i've ever seen or heard of outside the war zone area. Surely South Africans must be worried about this because they'll come a time one day when they turn against each other and the same people who are helpiing these attackers will feel the brunt. What goes around comes around.

South Africans don't regard themselves as part of Africa, you can pick it up from there conversation when they are talkiing about other people from African states, they call them ma-Afrika and they define themselves as South African.

The media is also to blame why do you continue to call people "ALIENS". What's an alien, in South African vocubulary is person from any part of Africa who lives in South Africa legal or illegally. Let this continue and one day we will meet when judgement day comes.
by Collen on May 23, 2008, 8:41 am
I dont know, It seems the situation in South Africa is worse. also it seems the government of south africa fail to ractify the situation since the south africans feel feel there are unequal opportunities among themeselves in etheir Employment as well as the opportunity for income genarating activities.

thus, My request to the government of the republic of south africa to look for alternative solution before the situation is becoming more worse.

the alternative situation should be aimed at the short term and then to apply the long term solution for sustainability.

Note: if the government is still reluctant to solve the situation, I am afraid to say that the relationship between the governments will be of no advantages to the people and therefore the south african will also be punished the same as our fellow citezens.

As a teenager I was shocked to learn of the barbaric genocide that took place in Rwanda. What saddened me the most was the fact that it was as recent as 1994. While in SA we celebrated our independents, men carrying pangas butchered their fellow countrymen, women and children. And I was upset by the the role Europeans had played in stirring up that turmoil. This though is beyond me! Such ruthless Black on Black violence in a time when South Africa leads the continent! To where then, I ask? These perpetrators are frustrated citizens with deep seated issues of anger against our government and its failure to deliver. They are taking irrational action against fellow Africans. I fear repercussions WHEN the rest of the continent retaliates and it will if this doesn't end soon, They are watching the situation very closely. The African in the Diaspora has already started retaliating, by boycotting all events/gigs organized by South Africans in London, soon the rest of Africa will boycott SA owned business in their countries/cities, and Africa will stand united and SA ousted as the ungrateful child after all that has been done by the rest of the continent for it to gain its independents from Apartheid. And then what? Do we think Africa will stand beside us when we try to salvage our now compromised chance to host the World Cup? And all those jobs expected will disappear. And then what? Will we not start to fight Xhosa's against Pedi's against Zulu's? And then what? Please can we apply some intelligence an long term vision on this matter...

Some of my friends and I were discussing this crises over coffee earlier, and thought how easy it is to have an opinion about something when you're at a distance from it. I feel like South Africans really need to band together on this. Middle-class "cosy" neighbourhoods can't afford to be apathetic. It's not enough to exclaim, "how horrible!" and then turn on the tv to watch your favourite sitcom. We need to DO something. But what? Anyone got any suggestions?

Some times people don't think before taking an action. I am triying to say it would be better if those people involved in such doltish deportments had initially planned this step by step and come into concored as in to what will be the outcomes after being the conquerors of this mess.

I am saying this because I believe that PLANNING helps every body to anticipate the future and to be able to respond creatively to what ever unexpected situation that comes around. I really hate what is going on because I never thought it would happen in South Africa since I last saw it in the moives[Shooting Dogs] from the DSTV. But now people had just adopted it.I DONT BELIEVE IT AND I HATE THIS. I hope urhulumente will do something about those people who staterd this in a serious manner of life sentence aplication so that they don't come out of sells tomorrow and create some other stupid things of which 9.99% out of 10% of SA people is reluctent to respond to it.

Why take out our frustrations on foreigners when it is the ANC that has caused these problems. Fix the problems at the source, not at the result. This is another one in a long list of problems that have been reported to the government before it happens, and they have refused to acknowledge it or do anything about it.
by cyberdog on May 28, 2008, 5:40 pm
Stephen Meeks, you are clearly an idiot without an clue, and its mentality like yours that has caused attacks like these. In the future before throwing around that dribble, how about some evidence to backup you statements, or is it all right to kill them if they are Afrikaaners, but blacks are unacceptable. Or was it the other way around... Why not just kill everyone, then you wont have anyone left to hate.

Stupidity, ignorance, greed, irresponsibility, criminal mindedness it's all that led to all this foolish attacks on the fellows brthers & sisters and even on the innocent kid who don't even a difference between a foreiner & non-foreigner. To all who committed this barbaric actions read my lips: YOU ARE FOOLISH & YOU WILL DIE FOOLISH, morons...! Those who been hurt & the ones the died I apologize for the pain and loss that you suffered & you are not foreigners or makwerekwere you are africans...

As a young black man i have lost hope in our leaders , not only SA but throughout African continent. Our leaders cant deliver post liberation, i suppose they have spent so many years fighting, reacting and plotting convetional out of the boxing thing is something foreign. I dont really blame them, all of them seems to be paronoid , lttle hitler clawns. I dread the day when all this oldies move the way give us youngster a chance ,just to show you effective leadership. As for all the political styles approach they have all failed from right out to diplomacy zero zilch therfore Anaylists/Journilists stop wrecking your brains. Its time to intergrate youngsters in governments , we might be impulsive but we have no mashangane bags , no favours to return , not closet closet darlings" . We will work and work delligency with effective and competency. Its time for ownership, responsibilities and accountability. We cant be held ransom and just waiting for a time boom . I am gatvol.
by Seema on May 30, 2008, 3:42 pm
Our Govt did not give a damn about other human beings being treated like animals.I will definitely not vote for people who only care about themselves. These attacks should open our eyes to what the future may hold for all South Africans,....by the way, I am Black and disgusted by these actions!!!!!!
by Axel Foley on May 31, 2008, 6:34 pm
Its unfortuantely that this thuggery had to take place. Africa wake up South Africa is not your land of honey and milk . They have their own crossess to carry maybe yours nmight be heavy but then agin ours could be heavier. We cant be held ransom by your help during struggle days, each country has procedures , laws and regulations. I hope this will be an eye opener even to the all the south african who ran away to Eurepean countiries never say never .
by Seema on June 3, 2008, 11:17 am
the current South african government is working at cleaning the apartheid mess, the next government will be working at cleaning up the mess that is currently being created (xenophobia and BEE). when will it all end???will it ever end?? will it..dark skin does not make u more of an african than a white person.what do u base ur being african? skin, language, linage, what?? nobody is pure, trace ur leage..ull discover the many nations u represent.. what do u base ur being South African on? the language u speak? xenophobia has no place any where in the world..we r all the same we just come in different shapes sizes colours and so on
by Bibi on June 4, 2008, 4:36 am
the new south africa... same old problems! there is little brotherliness or spirit of ubuntu in the townships ... my advice to everyone is to avoid them and the criminal gangs who mostly run them.
by bruce graves on June 6, 2008, 8:09 am
Firstly we must ask our selfs that what Morgan Tsvangirai was doing in South African because after he left evrything change and South Africans started to attack our brothers and sisters from African. Is it because of him and the only thing he cares about it is to call Zimbabwean to go back home for elections while people fighting for their lifes

enophobic Regret
The piece I wrote with regret

I can still hear myself shouting, singing,
I can still hear myself sayin’ “ f*ckof, This is not your home”
All I thought was, “we just are threatening them” until………….
Until I saw objects being thrown at him….
Until I saw him being kicked everywhere…
Until I saw blood running out of his nose, ears, eyes, arms, legs
Then reality hit me and I began to realise….........

I pray that in this time of difference we can remember to tolerate others and respect people for nothing less than the fact that they are human.

You all need to stop generalising. Without sounding otherwise, its part of the black community ruining it for all others. Think about what you say in future. i don't believe any of you know the cause or the solution. Try thinking along these lines.
by Denis on December 16, 2008, 2:55 pm
I am so sorry for what the other countries have and are doing to your country, with the prayers going out, may you all find freedom from all this mess and keep you all safe.
by Brenda on December 18, 2008, 5:43 pm
I am totaly against this behaviuor towrds fellow brothers and sisters. This country should be ashamed of itself. You see I am a Coloured South African from the Nortern Cape Staying in a Coloured township before it is now correctly open to all.My problem is that amongst these coloured they think of us from other provinces less and treat us inhumane, but they forget we are the ones who feed them, pay rent for a shack. So to me this thing of illteatment is also racist and prejudice, because people with a light complextion and curly hear will be treated different and a little more respect. They are so ignorant this hyprocrates because we or the majority of people from the Northern Cape are decent people, respectful, trustworthy and loyal. Please people respect others so that you can be respect.
